Traditional terms for my services include Clerical Advising or Pastoral Care; Spiritual Life Coach emphasizes a process of working together to find your spiritual truth, rather than suggesting I have The One True Answer. Unlike the majority of Life Coaches, my goal isn’t helping you devise and execute the perfect plan to acquire material goods; I can help you move forward with a purpose beyond merely paying bills and avoiding trouble.
Sister Flirt: An Introduction
Sister Flirtatious Romanovsky of Middlesex was accepted into the Toronto Order of Perpetual Indulgence (TOPI) as a Fully Professed Sister in 1983 as Sister Flagellation of Forbidden Fruit. Check out Flirt’s online TOPI Archives for more information on the Order
Brian Gryphon, Sister Flirt’s mundane persona, is a queer Blogger, Card Reader, Designer, Kinkster, Photographer and Poet. I am a third generation bi-national Can-American from Toronto ON, presently living in Columbus OH.
Baptized in the United Church of Canada while young and again in The Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto as an adult, I’ve studied a wide variety of spiritual traditions; nature-based ‘pagan’ as well as ‘major world religions’. I now identify as a “nontheist spiritual humanist” and am ordained in the Universal Life Church and licensed to perform weddings in Ohio.
As Unitarian/Universalist Minister Kenneth Phifer expressed it: “Humanism tells us that whatever our philosophy of the universe may be, ultimately the responsibility for the kind of world in which we live rests with us.” Spirituality doesn’t pretend to “have all the answers” but rather to try and ask the right questions. RCM is not a Christian (or any specific institutional religion) Ministry; rather a digital, queer, non-theist, spiritual humanist ministry of Joy, Kindness and Love.
Gay, Queer, Community Service
I came out as gay to my family and the world early in 1978. My paternal grandmother was never told, to honour a request from my family. All I want, need, demand, is to be accepted as I am. And so I now self-identify as queer – indeed I have for many years. I differ “from the normal or usual in a way regarded as odd or strange.” My relationships are far more complex, deeper and richer than can be fit into our society’s view of normal or usual.
During the early ’80s I discovered my interest in the leather/fetish worlds. No reason to go into detail; it has influenced which organizations and charitable causes I support. While living in Toronto I was Chapter President in a local affiliate of an international leather/denim social club. In 1991 and ’92 I was the Finals Production Director for the community-based organization that ran MLT– the MrLeathermanToronto series of contests that sent a representative to the annual International Mr Leather competition in Chicago while raising funds for local AIDS charities.
Using Tarot & Oracle Cards
After more than 3 decades of doing Card Readings, I have come to appreciate the benefits, and limits, of these common mass-printed cards. Their use is not mandatory in our work, but I do find they often help in understanding patterns in our thoughts and behaviours. Creative folk know, perhaps better than most, that visual messages tap into our primal mental functions.
I was introduced to the Tarot by my partner in 1980; together with a roommate, we studied cards, astrology, numerology and other divination tools. I do not believe in fate or destiny in the sense that the future is predetermined. However, we are creatures of habit, influenced by our personal & cultural histories and our biology; with varying levels of self-awareness. So can we really exercise ‘free will‘?
My view is that a Card Reading, like an attentive therapist (regardless of paradigm) should present questions rather than answers. As noted astrologer Steven Forrest put it, “modern astrologers predict questions, not answers” (The Changing Sky, 1986, Bantam, p.xiv). Various ‘occult traditions’ have spoken of vibrations, and energy; quantum physics is just starting to grasp the truths behind those concepts. Perhaps the cards help us tap into Carl Jung’s ‘collective unconscious’ collection of archetypes and information.
